Spinosaurus free writing

Hi there my name is Carmen and I study dinosaurs in my own time I have put together a piece of writing about a spinosaurus.

90 million years ago there was the most fearsome dinosaur that ever walked the earth, its name was Spinosaurus. The estimated weight of one Spinosaurus was about 22-30 tons also the Spinosaurus had an 18 metre body. Spinosaurus is Scopeovarnator and Exeophagus. In the Jurassic time it was easier to hunt because of the many herbivores, unlike the Triassic or the Cretaceous. Also following the Spinosaurus's trail was the Tyrannosaurus rex and other giant predators such as giganotosaurus carcharodontosaurus Allosaurus and Majungasaurus. They all were living together in a world of life and death. Unfortunately for the littler dino’s they could only run from the vicious beast’s in the many jungles of doom. Food was scarce in the Winter and Autumn but in the Spring and Summer it was plentiful. Onchopristis was one of the fish that Spinosaurus preyed on. The Onchopristis itself weighed about one ton with a body 8 meters long and had lethal barbs on the end of it’s teeth that helped it hunt for smaller fish. As the breeding season came the spine on the dino's back is used to attract a mate. Also absorbing all the sun's warmth and using it for in the winter when its is frozen. The females are a light green and grey colour and males tend to have bright red, yellow, green, orange and black.

Learning about sea turtles and explanation writing


Over the last few weeks, Hub Awhio learners have been building their knowledge about how to write explanation texts. We are applying our understanding of how to write a good explanation piece by writing about sea turtles. The different topics we are writing about are: the life cycle of a sea turtle and the different struggles turtles face to stay alive throughout their lives e.g. human interference and predators. In the photo above, we are taking notes about the life cycle of a sea turtle. We look forward to sharing our finished pieces with you all!

Luca and Hunter’s Camp at School Blog Post

This year the learners in hub 3 have been planning to go on a at school camp on February the 30th to February the 31st, we are doing this so we can deepen our friendship and strengthen our collaboration skills with each other. We have been planning this over the last 5 weeks in different groups, the reporters group (us), the food group, the resources group, the timetable group, the communication group,  the locations group, the campsite group, the activities group, the finance group and the grouping group. We have encountered many challenges and problems over the way and have come close to canceling the experience. We have worked hard and hope that our planning becomes a success. In this piece of writing we will take you with us on our learning journey.


The finances group has been going around asking groups how much money each they will need and why? Some learners have been fundraising money by selling ice blocks at lunch but they have only raised about $360 which is hardly enough to fund the camp, the food group needs about $400 just for one dinner, the finances group will need to get a loan from the school which isn’t what we wanted. We will need to pay the school loan that they gave us over time, we will probably make this money by selling ice blocks again.

The campsite groups job is to find out where the tents are going to go and how many will need, At the moment the campsite group thinks we should put the tents in front of the mound next to the sandpit. The school own’s 14 tents, and the campsite group is also asking people if they have any tents we could lend at the camp. But they aren’t sure who will be setting up the tents.

The groupings group has to make all the groups we are going to be in at camp. They finalized making the activity groups, they have also finished the sleeping groups and the job groups, that includes setting up and packing up lunch and dinner. But they might need to change some of the sleeping groups because if they get more tents the groups will get smaller or bigger.

The location group has been working on transport and they have been asking themselves questions. For example, If we do an activity how long will we go to the activity for? Like Gravity, as an option. Also, will we even need transport, because we might not even go somewhere far and the furthest place we might go could be the wetlands which is walking distance.

The communication group has been sending emails to parents for permission so we can come to the camp, also they have been sending emails to Mrs Martin to get permissions for the camping experience, they have also been sending out forms to find out information like if you have any allergies.

The activities group decide to split into smaller groups we interviewed the creative activity group they are currently organizing sketching, sculpting and balloons. Which will be held on the day of the camping experience, there are other groups in the activities group organizing certain aspects of the activities for example there is mental and physical to they are all organizing a different activity.

The reporters group has been documenting the process of the camping planning in all the other groups, We are creating blog posts, articles and movies. They are also going to be recording during the camping experience Cooper, Charlotte and Amanaki are creating a movie, Hunter and Luca are creating a blog post whilst Michael and Bar are writing an article.

The food group needs to prepare, make and serve, they are also finding out where to get the cheap food. They are going to call Pak'n'Save to find out how much the food is because there website doesn't say the price online. They are thinking everyone should bring their own cutlery to the camp to save money. They have been talking to the finance group to see how much money they can spend of food for everyone.

The timetable group has a very important job they need to find out when what is going to happen, they have finished the whole time table for the at school camp. It took them about a week and a half
to finish the whole thing, they mostly planned out the timetable together but sometimes they broke up into smaller groups. But at the moment they are making their backup timetable.

And last but not least, the resources group. The resources group job is to make sure on the day we have everything we will need when we need it, they have been talking with the activity, finance, timetable and food group to see want they will need on the day. But they have finished finding out all the resources everyone will need.

Journalist Of The Week (Week 2)

Selfie Wall:
This week we have been doing our Selfie Wall.
The Selfie Wall is when we take a picture of ourselves and we write our Strengths, Weaknesses and Attack.
For attack, we can write a quote of our choice, our hobby, a joke or a weird fact about ourselves.
We also decided to put our picture on a pokemon card template.
E.g:

On the top right corner you have the flag of your country and your year level.And on the top left is your name.

Camping:
This week we found out we’re going camp but there’s a twist…. It’s at school and the Year 7 and 8 students are planning it!
We can’t exactly tell you what’s going to happen, but we do know the day we go and the day we come back.
Sadly, it’s Year 7 & 8’s only, however we can tell you what we do when we see you at break times or during school hours.

In week 6’s blog post the writer will hopefully include what we will have done at camp.

Week 3 - Ice Blocks

Every year, the year 7/8s are given different leadership opportunities. The choices this term are Selling Ice Blocks, Staff Tuck Shop, Welcoming Visitors/Visitor Tour Guide, Assembly Usshers, Leading ASsembly, Working Digitals tools at Assembly, Wheels Day Stall Leader and Changing Spaces. Leadership opportunities is basically about letting the year 7/8s having a go at helping the school and being a real role model/leader at school.

This week some learners started selling Ice Blocks. It used to be on a Tuesday , but now we changed it to every Wednesday, still at lunchtime. But we don’t do it for the whole year, it is only in Term One and Term Four because those two terms are the sunniest terms and everyone would want an ice block on a scorching day, right? Besides, we fundraise heaps of money from it.


We are doing the leadership opportunities is also because it’s one way to fundraise for the year 7/8 . Not all the leadership choices, can be for fundraising, but some can, especially selling the ice blocks and most of the money comes to the intermediates. So we can do heaps of fun things with it, for example, going on camps, going on lots of hub trips, etc.

Week 3 - Breakthrough

Hub 3 are starting to build knowledge and collaborate as a team as they start their fun Breakthrough adventure. Many learners have thought of extraordinary ideas like Magnificent Mountain Biking, Spectacular Science Experiment, Marvellous Minecraft and also Fun Film Making. There has been tons of learning bubbling around the hub, breakthrough is also a time for the year 7’s to get to know the basics of the intermediate breakthrough level. We will need to use the learning process and the learner qualities to get us out of the Learning Pit when we are stuck.


Breakthrough is a bit about your passions, gifts and purpose. But it’s not just all about passions, it is also about learning what other people’s passions are. It is also an opportunity for learners to work with others that they have never worked with before and that might share the same interests. We will also be able to learn about other’s strengths, weaknesses and what they are really capable of doing.

My Breakthrough this term and maybe a bit of next term is about Minecraft. The people in my group are Madisyn, Sophie, Curie, Isabelle, Rique and myself. (Valery) We are doing Minecraft because we want to learn more about it and also working with a few people we have never worked with before. We are building Stonefields School in Minecraft and also creating a hunger game within the school. This will be challenging for all of us because our school is quite big and it will take us a long time to build the whole thing. That’s why it might go into a bit of next term as well.
